A Message from Dr. Spencer! What is the Choir Experience? That question becomes ever so important as we face online learning in choir! One thing you can not replace with technology is the sheer JOY of being together in a room, tuning a chord, turning and shaping a phrase, creating a powerful sound with all our voices or supporting a sweet melody with the softest dynamics. Choir is meant to be done together and in person. It is fellowship and community, personal interaction, discipline, team-work, and a love for each other and love for the music itself. One thing it is NOT is social distancing. It is the feeling of amazement when everything works perfectly, and laughing when it’s terrible or someone says something funny. It’s spending hours trying to match a vowel, and learning to send that final consonant to the audience member in row M so they can connect and feel what we feel. It’s even missing an entrance or taking a breath in the wrong spot. It’s ALL of it! It’s the experience of learning, singing, and expressing together. Nothing has made that more clear to me than sitting at home looking at a hundred different ways to teach choir online. I don’t want to. I want to be together in our choir room making music. Nonetheless, in the SAME spirit and with the same effort towards quality that we always give in the classroom, Ms. Durney and I are ready to give this thing a GO!
